Tyre Fitting

Description

Tyre fitters remove, repair and fit tyres for all types of vehicles. They may also advise customers on types of tyres, and check and adjust the wheel alignment on vehicles.

Tasks and Duties

Tyre fitters may do some or all of the following:

advise customers on tyre problems, choosing tyres and costs
drive vehicles on to hoists or jacks
change or repair tyres and balance wheels
align wheels
receive, check and shelve new tyres
test-drive vehicles to diagnose problems and make sure problems have been fixed
perform tyre sales work and take payments
keep the workshop clean and tidy

 
Personal Requirements & Skills

Tyre fitters need to have practical skills and basic mechanical, computer and maths skills. They also need to be able to analyse and diagnose problems, and have good people skills as they spend a lot of time dealing with the public.
 
Knowledge

Tyre fitters need to know about the construction of tyres, different types of tyres, vehicle parts and tyre fitting techniques. They also need to know about Land Transport Safety Authority regulations and safety standards.
 
Personal Qualities

Tyre fitters need to be reliable, efficient, accurate and hard working. They also need to be good team members, enjoy dealing with people and have an eye for detail.
 
Physical Requirements

Tyre fitters need to have a good level of fitness with a strong back, and good hand-eye co-ordination.
 
How to Enter the Job / Education

There are no specific educational requirements to become a tyre fitter, although School Certificate in English and maths are helpful.
 
Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements to become a tyre fitter, although it is useful to have a driver's licence.
 
Useful Experience

Experience working with vehicles, general mechanical work and customer service work are useful to become a tyre fitter.

Working Conditions / Work Places and Travel

Conditions can be noisy and dirty, and tyre fitters can spend a lot of time standing.

Tyre fitters usually work regular office hours. They may also work evenings and weekends during busy periods and attend emergency call-outs.

Salary varies, but most tyre fitters earn between $16,000 and $35,000 a year.
